Venus and David: Allegory, Myth, Fiction

The subjects of Venus and David are western cultural icons. The goddess Venus embodies love, beauty, sex, fertility, prosperity, and victory. David embodies the western hero myth of victory against the greatest odds. Venus and David: Allegory, Myth, Fiction, represents the evolution of my interest in narrative and narration, presented through photographic composites or diptych pairs. The conceit of this work interprets the observed and metaphoric worlds, to form fresh dialogue between both. Through judicious selection and combination of an array of photographs, I am able to re-interpret and form a new pictorial narration. The work attempts to operate within the ontological framework of the medium, holding closely to the conventions of photography, to exist in the intersection of representation and reality, examining gender, through metaphor, wit, and transformation, to reveal the sacred and profane in the observed world.
